AYÒDÉJÌ ISRAEL

Anti-resolution

we saw white smokes. & they wet our eyelids.
& witnessed the sky chanting blue elegies,
which fumes filled the brim of the eyes
of the sky. we were there, when the clouds
were shedding sad tears on the earth. we saw
clouds tearing their lens apart for waters
to fall on the lands they hoped to fall upon
when they grow weary of the atmosphere they grasp
their breath from. what can you do, when
you are with the world & the world is falling apart
from itself? you can only gaze, for a while,
or swallow a mouthful of amazement. but
you find yourself cracking with its hem, at last,
like a fisherman, drawn into the water by the fish,
with his hook. one is just to stand aloof, &
whisper some little timid prayers for the old soldier,
who has been taken into captivity by the same rifle
he is holding. what we saw was that. there
were young men and women, with good strings
sitting inside their arms, they shouted
for a moment & pulled their legs forward, like
they were pulling a canoe on a body of water. &
we heard sudden thunderbolt filling the air, &
sudden silence fell among them, like
they were walking on a tiny ladder to heaven
